Most home users have one wireless router installed for use with laptops and desktops and this meets all their needs. Some home users who want to got the extra mile and have a Media Server to supply the whole house with entertainment might require some of the more advanced options like cable installations.

HomePlug is a new technology where these devices utilise your mains ring as a big network, and now the speeds are good enough to use them to stream video throughout the house from one central computer or network device. This is getting very popular and basically involves a modified plug at each point required. On the bottom of the HomePlug device is an ethernet socket which connects to your laptop or desktop computer and without needing to run unnecessary wires through the home because the HomePlug transmits using the mains wires already installed in your house which can save a lot of mess an money. all you need is a HomePlug at either end (most are sold in pairs anyway).

Traditional wired networks for the office can be a lot more beneficial that using wirless as a primary network because it allows a larger data throughput whilst having less errors on the network. Devices can be easily added but unlike wireless will require a socket for each device, or at least a free port on a switch or router.

Wired networks are very flexible and can be used well in conjuction with wireless devices. If wireless is required it should be added on to a strong ethernet backbone to maintain the highest data speed possible on your network. Office applications often require a lot of bandwidth and wireless kit still cannot provide the bandwidth required. For internet browsing and moderate use standard wireless is fine (ie. email, youtube and iplayer).

If there any networking services not listed please contact Lancastrian IT to discuss your needs. Networking technology is always changing and we keep up to date.
